Abstract: Soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, pH, moisture, soluble sugars (SSU), total reducing sugars (RSU), and non-reducing sugars (NRS) were assessed in the pulp of pequi fruits collected at three ripening stages: from the plant, from the ground after naturally falling off, and collected from the ground three days after naturally falling off. The evaluation was performed after six months of freezer storage both for fruits subjected to quick freezing (liquid nitrogen followed by freezer) and slow freezing (straight into the freezer). The variables assessed were not influenced by the freezing method. The SS, TA, and RSU contents increased with the ripening stage, suggesting that the fruits collected from the plant are still immature and have lower quality than those collected after naturally falling off.

Abstract: The present work describes the fire effects on the population structure of Casearia sylvestris Swartz (Salicaceae). Diameter and height structure as well as spatial distribution patterns of the root sprouts were analyzed pre- and post‐fire. The morphology and anatomy of the underground system were also analyzed in order to investigate the nature and origin of sprouts from this system. In this study, a 10‐ha of Cerrado area was sampled from February to November 2006; in August, a fire burned roughly 80% of the study area, allowing us to compare the data collected pre- and post‐fire. Our findings show that the underground systems consisted of specialized roots and buds originated close to the vascular cambium. The spatial distribution of the root sprouts became clustered pre‐ and post‐fire and most of the root sprouts were concentrated in the first size class, indicating that the sprouts from roots play an important role in the recovery of this species in burnt areas.; Este artigo descreve os efeitos de incêndio na estrutura populacional de Casearia sylvestris Swartz (Salicaceae).

Porém, sob luz houve escurecimento das plântulas comprometendo seu desenvolvimento.; Studies about the influence of light on the germination and early development are important to cultivate physic nut in the field. The aim of this study was to evaluate the light effect on the seed germination of physic nuts from distinct geographical provenances and to examine the morphology of seedlings. The first germination bioassay was accomplished in a dark chamber and the second in the presence of light (32 µmol m-2s-1) with a daily photoperiod of 12 hours. There was no significant difference in the percentage of seed germination between of the seeds of the studied lots. The percentage of germination was high in all lots (in the dark or under light), being the seeds classified as neutral photoblastic. In the dark, the seedlings had a greater number of emerged and opened cotyledons, length of hypocotyl-root axis, and growth rate. These results are explained by etiolation of seedlings, germinated in the dark. However, under the light, there was a darkening of seedlings, which impaired impairing its development.

Título: Combined effects of low light and water stress on Jatropha curcas L. promotes shoot growth and morphological adjustment

Abstract: Jatropha curcas (physic nut) is a plant with economic and pharmaceutical uses. Basic studies on the influence of environmental factors on the early development of J. curcas are important for improving farming techniques and increasing productivity. This study investigated the adjustments of J. curcas to the environmental factors of drought and light stress in order to determine which factors most strongly affect the allocation of biomass during early growth. Leaves, stems, and roots of young plants were sampled and leaf area was measured during January and June in 2011. Plants of J. curcas that were grown in shade and subjected to water stress showed higher biomass allocation to aerial parts (mainly stems), which can be explained as a strategy for maximizing carbon assimilation. The pattern of biomass allocation between aerial components and the root system changed in plants grown in shade. During June 2011, biomass in shade-grown J. curcas was preferentially allocated to stems, indicating long-term adjustment. The lower biomass allocation to the root system suggests reduced exploitation of soil water even when this resource is scarce. Thus, over the long term, growth of J. curcas may be compromised by the combined effects of light stress and water deficit.
