Variances heterogeneity in the genetic evaluation of the Brown Swiss animals in Brazil
Aiming to evaluate the effect from the variance heterogeneity in the genetic evaluation of the Brown Swiss animals in Brazil, the registers of the milk and milk fat production were used to determine either the variance components and the sire’s genetic values, by using through the MTDFREML program. So, three models were used, without and with interaction of either sire x herd or sire x herd-year, where the genetic group, season of calving, and herd -year class were considered as fixed effects, whereas the effects from the animals, permanent environment, the interaction when considered in the model, and the error were considered as random ones, in the univariate and multitrait analyses. The likelihood ratio test was applied to verify the effectiveness in including the interaction effects into the models. When studying the effects from the interaction of sire x herd and the sire x herd-year upon the genetic evaluation of sires, multitrait models for milk and fat production were used. The variance components practically did not alter and the heritability coefficients were close to each other. The heritability estimate went of 0,40 to both characteristics, and the genetic correlation among the characteristics of 0,94, except when the model considered the effect of the xiiinteraction sire x herd, where for fat production, the heritability went of 0,39, and the genetic correlation among the characteristics of 0,95. The natural logarithm of the likelihood function increased (P<0,01), when the interaction effects were included into models. Pearson and Spearman correlations among the genetic values obtained by these different models were superior to 0.99, for milk and fat production, and above 0.90 between the appraised characteristics. Therefore, the interactions of sire x herd and the sire x herd- year caused no changes in the classification of the sires, and there was no need for considering them into the genetic evaluation models. In order to analyze the importance of the variance heterogeneity between herds and the effectiveness in including the interaction of sire x herd and sire x herd-year as an adjust factor for this heterogeneity, the data were stratified into two classes, based on the phenotypic standard deviation of the herds, for milk production, adjusted to two daily milkings, to a lactation period of 305 days, and the cow’s adult age. The components of variance for milk and fat production were obtained in general univariate analyses, in univariate analyses, in each class of standard deviation and in multitrait analyses, in that the characteristic in each class of the phenotypic standard deviation was considered to be a different characteristic. The components of the genetic addictive and residual variances were higher in the class of high phenotypic standard deviation, and they reduced or practically did not vary with the inclusion of the interaction effects into the model. In the multitrait analyses, the components of the genetic variance were generally higher than those obtained in the univariate analyses, so resulting into higher heritability estimates (0,34 a 0,39). The genetic correlations between both standard deviation classes were equal to 1.0 in all analyses. When considering the interaction effects in the analyses, the correlations among the genetic values practically did not change. When including the effect into the model, the natural logarithm of the likelihood function increased (P<0,01) for fat production in the multitrait analyses. Therefore, it was found that the interactions of sire x herd and sire x herd-year were not efficient to correct the variance heterogeneity, and although the xiiiheterogeneous variances was observed, these might be disregarded in the genetic evaluations without affecting the accuracy of the animals’ genetic values.
