Synthesis and characterization of lignin-phenol-formaldehyde adhesives for wood and derivatives
The objective was to include Kraft lignin in the synthesis of phenolic adhesives and to evaluate their effect on the properties of the same. The lignin was phenolated at 15, 30, 45 and 60%, and used for the production of resoles by the substitution of phenol, producing four lignin-phenol-formaldehyde adhesives, besides the control, without substitution. The adhesives were characterized by bonding the wood to evaluate the resistance in the glue line, under dry and wet conditions. MDPs were produced with Eucalyptus sp. From the control and adhesive treatments 3, which most resembled that one. The UEH, apparent density, swelling and water absorption after 2h and 24h immersion, perpendicular traction, MOR and MOE, screw pulling and Janka hardness of the panels were evaluated, and the results were compared to NBR and ANSI standards. It was verified that the lignin had low levels of humidity, carbohydrates, ashes and minerals, and high percentage of total lignin. An increase in the viscosity of the adhesives was observed as the amount of lignin present was increased. Statistical differences were observed between the pH of the adhesives, which were also associated with the addition of lignin, but in an inverse relationship. The gelatinization time also varied statistically among the treatments, unrelated to the lignin content present; All adhesives synthesized with phenol substitution showed gelatinization time lower than the control. All treatments presented statistical differences regarding solids content, being the highest value found for the control adhesive. The presence of lignin in the adhesives did not impair its adhesion and mechanical strength properties, since most of the adhesives presented values of shear strength statistically equal to the control. Adhesive 3 was the one that most resembled or surpassed the control. The mean values obtained for UEH, apparent density and Janka hardness of the MDPs met the standards, but only treatment 3 was satisfactory in the screw tear test. Panels made with the lignin- phenol-formaldehyde adhesive swelled less in relation to the others. It was concluded that the addition of Kraft lignin in the phenolic adhesives did not cause damage to the properties of the panels, and gave them greater resistance to water.
