The efficiency in the choice of the parents whom, when crossed, produce hybrids and, later, promising segregating populations, is a determining factor for the success of a breeding program. Several techniques have been proposed with the aim of increasing the probability of obtaining superior segregating populations and the gains from selection in the first stages of the breeding program. In view of the above, the objectives of the present study were: I) To determine the general and specific combining ability of six soybean parents in order to identify those promising and their best combinations for the development of superior lines for precocity and grain production, as well as , the best time of evaluation; II) To study the genetic aspects related to the precocity and grain yield in initial generations of soybean, during two seasons of the year; III) To evaluate the suitability of the individual BLUP methodology (BLUPIS) in the selection within segregating soybean populations; and IV) To describe new selection indices that can be applied in the situations in which F2 populations and their progenitors are simultaneously evaluated, and to predict the genetic gain by selecting the best populations for precocity and grain yield. Six commercial soybean cultivars (MSOY6101, RSF6563IPRO, TMG123RR, SYN9078RR, TMG801 and MSOY9144RR) were crossed in complete, non-reciprocal diallel scheme, thereby obtaining 15 hybrids. The six parents and their 15 hybrids (21 treatments) were evaluated in a greenhouse during the winter of 2014 and summer of 2014/15. A second experiment was conducted in the field, in Viçosa-MG, in the crop season 2014/2015, where the parents and their segregating populations (F2) were evaluated, obtaining information at the individual level. In the first part of the study it was observed that the interactions general combining capacity x Time and specific capacity of combination x Epoch can not be disregarded in the evaluation of diallel crosses in soybean. The most promising crosses for the extraction of superior lines are: RSF6563IPRO x MSOY9144RR and SYN9078RR x MSOY9144RR for days for maturation, TMG123RR x MSOY9144RR and SYN9078RR x MSOY9144RR for number of days for maturation, and RSF6563IPRO x SYN9078RR, MSOY6101 x MSOY9144RR and TMG123RR x TMG801 for grain yield. In the second part, it was verified that the additive and dominance gene effects were important in the genetic control of the number of days for flowering and maturation, and grain yield per plant. The number of days for flowering and maturation, and grain yield in F1, in the winter and summer, and F2 in summer are determined by dominant alleles. The preponderant partial dominance was found for all traits in the F1 generation and overdominance in the F2 generation. The third part showed that there was full agreement between BLUP individual and BLUPI methodologies (BLUPI) only for grain yield. The BLUPIS presented better performance when used in the selection of quantitative genetic control characters. Moreover, when compared to individual BLUP (BLUPI), it has the advantage of not selecting individuals in the families that presented performed below the general average. BLUPIS contributes to the selection of individuals in representative numbers of the best populations, as a consequence, it can provide substantial gain for soybean breeding programs. Finally, in the fourth stage of the study, the application of selection indexes proved to be more efficient than the selection based on the genetic additive values of the population. The inclusion of the parents' information and the variance within the population increased the expectation of gains for all the traits studied. Genetic gains for grain yield can reach up to 12% and 32%, with selection between and within the population, via index with variability information within population. The selection among populations can provide genetic gains of the order of 12% to reduce flowering time and 7% to reduce the time to maturation. The index that includes the genotypic values of parents and F2 populations was the best strategy to increase the gains with the selection.
