This work aimed to study the reproductive biology of Bidens segetum in a natural population located in a fragment of a semi-deciduous seasonal forest, denominated Mata do Paraíso Research, Training and Environmental Education Station in Vicosa, (20°45 S and 42°54 W), Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais. From May 2006 to May 2008, 17 individuals were marked for phenologic follow-up and observations on the biology of flowers and capitula, reproductive system and pollinators. Fifty-four capitula were followed up, from anthesis of the first flowers to dispersion of the diaspores, characterizing several reproductive aspects, including pollen secondary presentation (PSP). Seed viability originated from cross and open pollinations was tested by applying the tetrazolium test. Floral visitors were assessed and abundance of visits by major pollinators was calculated. B. segetum is an evergreen species; flowering from March to May, with a peak in April and fruit set from April to September, with a peak in May. On the first day of the capitulum, the sterile ligulate flowers were at pre- anthesis. On the third day of the capitulum, anthesis of the ligulate flowers occurred, with the flowers lasting for10 days. On the fourth day, anthesis of the first group of perfect tubulate flowers occurred. Within five consecutive days, 96% of the tubulate flowers were open. Anthesis of each tubulate flower started at 6:30 h; pollen grains are released on the style branches, characterizing PSP and initiating the staminate phase; this phase lasted 10 hours. The pistillate phase initiated immediately after, characterized by the exposure of stigmatic lines; this phase lasted three days. On the 15th day of the capitulum, all the flowers were senescent and on the 20th day, the diaspores initiated the process of dispersion. B. segetum is self-incompatible and >87% of the seeds were viable. A total of 58 species of butterflies, 18 species of bees, three of beetles and three of visiting true bugs were recorded in the capitula. Pollination was carried out by the butterflies (83.75% of the visits) and by the bees (16.25%). This study showed that B. segetum presents short annual flowering, is xenogamous and enthomophilous and has broadened the information on the anthophilous insects of the area under study, especially butterflies, since these insects are not well known as pollinators.
