Integrated management of white mold of bean
The white mold (WM), caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is the most harmful to bean plant disease in the autumn-winter crop. Applications of fungicides, the use of upright cultivars, reducing the plant population and genetic resistance are among the most important control measures in the management of this disease. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the possibility of reducing the density of the type II bean plants, which differ in resistance to WM when grown in areas with a history of the disease; evaluate bean lines in the tests of Cultivation and Use Value (CUV) in Minas Gerais for resistance to WM and evaluate sources of resistance to WM in the "Bean White Mold Nursery" network tests under pressure of WM, and other local diseases. To evaluate the possibility of reducing the density of the type II bean plants, which differ in their resistance to WM, six experiments were conducted at two sites (Viçosa and Oratórios, MG). The treatments were disposed in factorial arrangement 4 x 2 x 2: number of plants per meter (4, 7, 10 or 13); lines (CNFC 10720 or VC 6); and with or without application of the fungicide fluazinam. The CNFC 10720 line has partial resistance to the disease and the VC 6 is susceptible. The main characteristics that were evaluated are the incidence and severity of WM, and grain yield. In evaluating the lines of the CUV's for the reaction to WM five field experiments were conducted at two sites (Viçosa and Oratórios, MG), and two in the greenhouse. In the greenhouse, the plants were inoculated using the straw test method. In the field, the main characteristics evaluated were lodging, intensity of MB, and productivity. In the greenhouse, the length of injury and disease severity were evaluated. To evaluate lines of the network tests "Bean White Mold Nursery", three field experiments in three locations (Viçosa, Oratórios and Coimbra, MG), and two in greenhouse were carried out. In the greenhouse, the plants were inoculated using the straw test. In the field, the main characteristics that were evaluated are intensity of WM, anthracnose severity, angular leaf spot and fusarium wilt, and grain yield. In the greenhouse, the length of injury and disease severity were evaluated. Regarding the possibility of reducing the density of Type II bean plants, the results suggest that the reduction of 12 to 15 plants per meter, currently recommended, to 7 to 10 plants per meter for the type II bean, stabilizes the productivity, regardless of the degree of the cultivar resistance to the WM and the use or not of fungicide in areas with a history of WM. In evaluating the CUV lines for resistance to WM, it was found that the BRS Vereda and CNFC 10722 are good sources of partial resistance in the field, and can be useful in breeding programs for resistance to WM. The VC 17 line of carioca beans has good production in areas with a history of the disease, regardless of its intensity. The Cornell 605 and A 195 lines, from the network testing "Bean White Mold Nursery", stood out even subjected to the action of WM, anthracnose, angular leaf spot and fusarium wilt. They showed high levels of resistance to WM, associated with high grain yield and resistance or intermediate resistance to other diseases.
