Interaction between hydraulic and photosynthetic parameters in Coffea spp

There are considerable gaps on the hydraulic efficiency in coffee (Coffea spp.), as well as little is known about the interrelations between leaf hydraulic characteristics and morpho-anatomic characteristics and how these characteristics are associated with a view to maximizing gas exchange in coffee. This study explored the morphological, hydraulic and physiological variability in eight coffee genotypes in order to understand how they interact between each other the main limiting hydraulic factors of the photosynthesis in coffee as well as investigate the trade-off between efficiency and hydraulic safety. To this end, we compared different coffee genotypes, including genotypes/species evolved in different environments with respect to water availability, as well as old and new varieties of coffee. The study was conducted under field conditions and physiological measurements and samples were collected between October 2014 and April 2015. Despite the large morphological variability at leaf level in Coffea spp, it was demonstrated that the studied genotypes showed relatively low values of leaf hydraulic conductivity in parallel with a low transpiration capacity. These characteristics were associated with strong diffusion limitations to photosynthesis, a fact further illustrated by the high correlation between net photosynthesis rate and stomatal conductance. Register, however, that in low vapor pressure deficit conditions, photosynthetic rates per unit leaf area seem reasonably preserved in Coffea spp. Overall, there were no consistent correlations between leaf hydraulic conductivity and venation density (and various other hydraulic parameters), suggesting the existence of high extra-vascular resistance in coffee. In any case, the results showed a moderate to high resistance to hydraulic dysfunction (with positive hydraulic margins). Accordingly, the diameter of xylem conduits appears to be directly involved in the determination of the hydraulic safety in Coffea spp., with a larger proportion of smaller diameter conduits leading to greater hydraulic safety. There was a high correlation (r2 = 0, 84) between unitary leaf area and P50 (the leaf water potential inducing 50% loss of Kf compared with conductance values measured in well hydrated, near-full turgor leaves), suggesting that genotypes with lower leaves are more tolerant to cavitation. In terms of coordination between hydraulic parameters and water relations there was no relationship between P50 values and the water potential in the turgor loss point, but there was a positive correlation between P50 and the elastic modulus (r2 = 0,73) and the osmotic potential in full turgor (r2 = 0,57). Concerning the anatomical characteristics related to strengthening mechanism at the level of vessels, there was no relationship between P50 and the values of (t/b)3 (ratio between cell wall thickness and vessel lumen diameter). On the other hand, there were significant correlations between P50 and parameters such as diameter of xylem conduits (r2 = 0,6) and the theoretical conductivity of xylem (r2 = 0,41). In sum, the results indicate that genotypes of Coffea spp. exhibit characteristics that give them a medium to high drought tolerance, and that the relatively low hydraulic efficiency competes, ultimately, to limit the photosynthetic potential of the coffee.
