To give information about the drying process of bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) the objective of this work was to determinate thin-layer drying curves and to evaluate the immediate and latent effects at four temperature levels of drying air (35, 40, 45 and 50 ° C), three levels of initial moisture contents (17,1; 25,5 and 37,3% w.b.) and two levels of final moisture contents (11 and 13% w.b.) on the physiological quality and susceptibility to seed breakage. The drying tests were accomplished using an experimental dryer in which an axial fan provided the drying air leading it into the plenum with a 3 -1 -2 constant flux about 10 m .min .m where the air was distributed on three removable trays containing seed samples. The experimental data of the thin- layer drying were evaluated by adjusting the model proposed by Page. To anlyse seed physiological quality soon after drying and 180 days under storage it was made the germination standard test and the vigour indications were the first-counting evaluation of the germination standard test and the tetrazolium and electric conductibility tests. To evaluate the susceptibility to breakage soon after drying, it was used the "Stein Breakage Tester" equipment. The result analysis allow to conclude that Page's model provided with the parameters k and n, exponentialy adjusted as a function of drying-air temperature and initial moisture content, describes satisfactorily the drying process of bean seeds. It was observed that the drying-air temperature and initial and final moisture contents affect seed germination and vigour soon after drying and 180 days under storage. Also it was verified that seeds with lower initial moisture content (17,1% w.b.) presented better germination and vigour results soon after drying and 180 days under storage independently from the used temperature and final moisture content. The drying effects on germination and vigour of bean seeds with initial moisture of 25,5% w.b. was less accentuated soon after drying when compared to the results encountered after 180 days under storage, for the temperature and final moisture intervals studied. However, seeds with initial moisture of 25,5% w.b. submitted to drying at 35 ° temperature until reaching C the final moisture content of 13% w.b., presented germination above 80% and a high vigour after 180 days under storage. Seeds with initial moisture of 37,3% w.b. were more susceptible to physiological quality loss soon after drying and 180 days under storage, for all temperatures and final moisture levels. It was verified that the susceptibility to bean seed breakage soon after drying increases with increasing initial moisture content, independently from the used temperature.
