Two sites of Semideciduous Seasonal Forest in different successional stages (initial forest and mature forest) were studied seeking to characterize the floristic composition and horizontal structure, to evaluate the distribution the tree species in relation to the environmental variables, to quantify the annual production of litter and the annual rate of nutrient deposition and to evaluate the decomposition and annual nutrient use efficiency. This study was carried in the Mata do Paraíso Forest Reserve in Viçosa-MG during 12 months, between Nov/2003 and Oct/2004. Individual trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 4.8 cm were sampled in 20 – 10 x 30 m plots. Twenty wooden litter traps of 1m2 were placed in the center of the plots to evaluate the annual litter production. Collections took place on a monthly basis and the material deposited in the traps was separated in as to leaves, branches, fruits/seeds and flowers. The fractions were dried and weighed and the nutrient concentration analyzed. Litterbags (20 x 20 cm) were filled with vegetable material aiming to determine the decomposition rate in the initial and mature forest and to evaluate the exchange of vegetable material between the forest sites. In the initial forest 399 individuals were identified, distributed among 47 genera, 27 families and 55 species. Based on the their importance value (IV), the most representative species were Piptadenia gonoacantha, Vernonanthura diffusa, Miconia cinnamomifolia, Piptocarpha macropoda, Luehea grandiflora, Annona cacans, Senna macranthera, Siparuna guianensis, Sparattosperma leucanthum and Psychotria vellosiana. The most representative families were Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Melastomataceae, Annonaceae, Malvaceae and Siparunaceae. The Shannon diversity index (H’) was 3.31 and the Pielou evenness (J’) was 0.83. In the mature forest 623 individuals were identified, distributed among 62 genera, 31 families and 78 species. Based on their importance value (IV), the most representative species were Euterpe edulis, Piptadenia gonoacantha, Nectandra lanceolata, Myrcia sphaerocarpa, Guapira opposita, Nectandra oppositifolia, Allophylus edulis, Bauhinia forficata, Guarea macrophylla and Prunus sellowi. The most representative families were Fabaceae, Arecaceae, Lauraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Sapindaceae and Meliaceae. The Shannon diversity index (H’) was 3.46 and the Pielou evenness (J’) was 0.79. The two forest sites showed clear differences in the levels of canopy openness and soil fertility, factors that influenced the floristic and successional differences of tree-shrub compartment, revealed by the low similarity between these forests by cluster analysis. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of environmental variables and species abundance indicated that the species in these forests studied are distributed under a strong influence of light regime, moisture and soil fertility. The annual litter production was estimated at 6,310 kg ha-1 for the initial forest and 8,819 kg ha-1 for the mature forest. The predominate fraction was the leaves (64.6% and 55.9%), followed by branches (31.2% and 36.4%), fruits and seeds (3.2% and 6.2%) and flowers (1.0% and 1.5%) for the initial forest and for the mature forest, respectively. Litter production was uniform throughout the period analyzed, thus showing a seasonal pattern with the largest values in the spring. The litter production correlated more with density of individuals in the plots and with the biomass than with the dominance of pioneer species. The annual deposition of nutrients by litter was estimated at 137 kg ha-1 of nitrogen, 5 kg ha-1 of phosphorus, 17 kg ha-1 of potassium, 89 kg ha-1 of calcium and 21 kg ha-1 of magnesium for the initial forest and 180 kg ha-1 of nitrogen, 8 kg ha-1 of phosphorus, 45 kg ha-1 of potassium, 179 kg ha-1 of calcium and 26 kg ha-1 of magnesium for the mature forest. The instantaneous decomposition rate (k) was estimated at 0.78 for the initial forest and 1.32 for the mature forest and the average litter renovation time equaled 419 days for the initial forest and 277 days for the mature forest. The exchange of vegetable material between the forests favored the increase of the decomposition of leaf litter of initial forest and the decrease of leaf litter decomposition of the mature forest. The fast decomposition of leaf litter in the initial forest when submitted to the decomposition in the mature forest, indicate that the decomposition process is affected not only by litter quality, but also by environmental quality, which in the mature forest showed more favorable to the unlocking of this process. The annual nutrient use efficiency for the elements P, K and Ca was less than in the mature forest, indicating that the soil conditions in this environment become unnecessary for the development of more efficient mechanism for the maintenance of these nutrients in the vegetable tissue and the primary production of this forest maybe is not limited by the availability these nutrients.
