Resistance and yield levels of coffee in the coffee rust progress
The occurrence of rust in Brazil has limited the production obtained of coffee plants. The cultivars in use are susceptible to this disease, like Catuaí and Mundo Novo, nevertheless, genotypes with horizontal resistance and with potential to the use for cultivars have been obtained. Considering the importance of this disease to the coffee plant, were valued in this work: (i) the production capacity and the development of rust in Catimor progenies, containing genes that control the vertical and horizontal resistance; (ii) the segregation of descendants for the pathogen reaction; (iii) the genic dose for the horizontal resistance in the descendants; (iv) the effect of levels of production in plants of Catuaí on the development of rust and (v) the tenor of nutrients and of carbohydrates in the leaves of plants attacked by the disease. By the obtained results in this work, the hybrid progenies UFV 6861, UFV 6870, UFV 6831 and UFV 6834 presented excellent productivities (P < 0.05), similarly to the Catuaí cultivar. The progenies UFV 5530, UFV 5451, UFV 5550, UFV 6903 and UFV 5464 did not presented plants diseased. A positive and significative correlation (r = 0.56) was encountered between incidence of rust and productivity in Catimor progenies. The descendants varied for the reaction to the rust from the complete resistance to high susceptibility, but the most situed in the intermediaries levels, showing the presence of horizontal resistance in the genotypes. Compared to the Catuaí cultivar, it can be concluded that the studied genotypes possess horizontal resistance, with the media number of lesions and the lesioned foliar area 13 and 21 times least, repectivelly, on the UFV 6866, moreover, the sporulation reached only the score 0.1 in UFV 6870, low if compared to the Catuaí, that had presented the score 3.6. The incubation period of the studied genotypes varied from 18 to 36 days and the latency period varied from 20 to 46 days. When was studied the relation between the levels of production and the disease in the Catuaí Vermelho, it was observed that the presence of fruits in initial phase of development was sufficient to the establishment of the disease, opposed to had occurred when it had only flowers. When the plants had all off fruits in initial phase of development thinned out, the disease decreased. The rust reached greater proportions from January, reaching the pike on the harvesting, in July. The pathogen get 95% of the leafs when the productivity was of 62.75 bags (60 kg) per hectare, and 49% of the infected area leaf, on average, at the end of the experiment. Around 60% of variation among the levels of disease can be explained by the variation of production. Correlation of up to 78% were obtained between the severity of rust at plants and the production. The area under disease progress curve did not differed levels of production, but put aside the plants without load (P < 0.05). About 74% of the variation among the tenores of potassium of the leaves were explained by the variation of production, as well as 51% for phosphorous and 45% for copper, showing that have had deviation of then to the fruits and allowing the leaves become more susceptible to the attack of the rust. The tenores of potassium varied in function of levels of fruits, different of the other elements. The tenores of carbohydrates varied mainly of the time of evaluation, influenced by vegetative or reproductive growth and by climatic conditions. The tenores of carbohydrates of the leaves of plants that had not the fruits thinned out were lower than that encountered in the leaves of plants without fruits. Probably it had occurred due to the formation of fruits and by emphasized necrosis of leaves caused by the pathogen.
