Three assays were carried out under greenhouse conditions at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa with the following objectives: a) to evaluate the effects of the hydric stress on the physiological, anatomic and growth characteristics of Brachian'a bn’zantha plants; b) to evaluate the rainfall influence on the behavior of glyphosate and sulfosate applied to B. Brizantha plants grown under and without hydric stress; c) to verify the herbicides washing by rainfall. In the first assay, four pots which were representative for each soil moisture condition were selected to evaluating the characteristics. In the second assay, seven time intervals between application and rainfall occurrence (15 and 30 mm) were tested. The assay was arranged on a factorial scheme (7 x 2)+3 with four replicates. At the 3oth day the herbicide toxicity and the aerial part dry biomass were evaluated, while resprouting was evaluated at 45 days after plant cutting. In the third assay the bioassay technique was used to evaluate the herbicide residues ithhe water collected after rainfall simulation (Ieachate), and the tomato was used as test-plant. The pattern curve was determined by the logistic model, and increasing doses of the herbicides and Ieachates were used. The assays were conducted in nutritive solution and the evaluation of the dry biomass in the aerial part and roots, the total biomass and the root length were evaluated at the 2oth day. The results showed that under hydric stress conditions the B. bn’zantha plants presented less development. a decrease in the photosynthesis and transpiration rates and also in stoma conductance. Just after herbicide application the rainfall simulation diminished the glyphosate and sulfosate controls on B. Bn'zantha. In plants under no- hydric stress conditions the herbicide behavior were similar when the interval between application and rainfall simulation (15mm) was six hours. At shorter intervals the sulfosate was less washed away than glyphosate. When plants were submitted to hydric stress the herbicides were better washed away, and a greater sprouting occurred in the treated plants. In the bioassays the herbicides were detected into solution, so confirming that glyphosate and sulfosate were washed from B. bn'zantha leaves even when the rainfall occurred six hours after application. The test-plant was more sensible to glyphosate, and the root length was the best characteristic showing the herbicide effects. In general. the bioassays showed to be a viable technique for studying these herbicide residues in water.
