Changes in soybean plants under hydric deficit at the reproductive stage

The hydric deficit, considered one of the main limiting factors of agriculture, affects the development and the growth of numerous crops, resulting in a reduction in productivity and changes in the quality of the final product. The plants respond to the hydric stress in a complex way, involving a range of factors related to the genetic characteristics, morphological, physiological and biochemical mechanisms. The soybean crop is important worldwide, due to the high content of proteins and lipids present in the grains. However, it is a crop very sensitive to hydric deficit, especially in the reproductive stage, considered a decisive period in the development of the grains. Thus, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the hydric deficit effect, imposed in the reproductive stage of two soybean genotypes, grown under greenhouse conditions and under environmental conditions. Physiological parameters (gas exchange, relative content of water on leaves and electrolytes extravasation), biochemical (antioxidant enzymes activity, total soluble protein of leaves and total phenols content on grains), productivity (number of nodes, number of pods per pot, average number of grains per pod) and nutritional quality of grains (total protein content, lipids and total flavonoids of grains). In the greenhouse experiment, it was found that the hydric deficit negatively affected the gas exchanges in the R5 stage, while the membrane damage was higher in the R3 stage. The hydric restriction of 60% of the field capacity for five days changed the productivity of the plants of both cultivars, being the NA 5909 the most productive. Hydric deficit in the R3 stage caused to the ST 797 cultivar the greatest number of seed pods with malformed grains. The highest protein accumulation occurred in both, full irrigation and hydric restriction conditions, in the R3 stage by the ST 797 cultivar. It also presented the highest flavonoid content. The highest lipids content was observed in the NA 5909 cultivar, independent on the imposed hydric condition. However, the hydric restriction on the R5 stage reduced lipids accumulation on both cultivars. In the experiment conducted under field conditions, it was observed that the hydric deficit caused a reduction of the stomatal conductance concomitant with the photosynthesis and transpiration reduction. This transpiration reduction collaborated to the increase in plant leaf temperature. The 40% hydric reduction of the field capacity for five days decreased the relative content of leaf water of both cultivars. The cultivar NA 5909 presented the highest number of malformed seed pod independent of the hydric condition. The hydric restriction decreased the lipids content of both cultivars. The ST 797 cultivar presented highest protein content and flavonoids in full irrigation condition in comparison to NA 5909. The low water availability did not cause reduction on the protein and flavonoids content.
