The environmental enrichment (EE) techniques are widely known and used to increase well-being and minimize the stress caused by a lack of stimuli in captivity. Even though canids have a highly developed and sensitive sense of smell, EE with scents has been little explored. In the study of wild animals in captivity, the use of olfactory EE requires ease of access and low risk of stress. In addition to the wild canids, there is a large population of domestic dogs that spend a large part of their lives confined in institutional shelters, and both groups could benefit from olfactory EE programs. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the reaction to olfactory stimuli in four canid species, Lycalopex vetulus, Cerdocyon thous, Chrysocyon brachyurus and Canis lupus familiaris, with the use of olfactory environmental enrichment. The four attractive olfactory stimuli were presented to the animals from outside their enclosures and the animals reaction was filmed and afterwards analyzed with focal animal sampling and with the recording of all behaviors. The behavioral responses were classified as positive, negative or others. The average recorded times for each set of behaviors were calculated. The different responses were compared between the basal phases (before the stimulus), during the enrichment and after the removal of the olfactory stimulus for the four canids. In domestic dogs the different responses were compared between the different stimuli, as well as whether there were differences in the responses depending on the size of the pack in each enclosure. The different responses were also compared between the three species of wild canids. For the four species, the positive olfactory stimuli altered the behavioral responses. There was an increase in the positive behaviors and in the crab-eating fox there was also an increase in the negative behaviors from the pre-enrichment phase to the phase with the stimulus. There was an increase in the positive behaviors after the removal of the stimulus only in the crab-eating fox. Among the wild species, the crab-eating fox and the hoary fox were the most different ones in terms of behavior, with the maned wolf being intermediate between these two species. In general, the olfactory EE was not efficient to enrich and improve the animal s well-being except for the maned wolf. There were different reactions among the species, indicating that it is necessary to know the biology of each species within one family (Canidae) to make adequate stimuli to stimulate desirable behavioral responses, according to the EE objectives.eng
