The hygienic behavior is an essential adaptation to social life. Among bees, it is defined as the ability of the bees to detect, detach and remove the sick offspring, parasitized or dead from the brood cells. In Meliponini this behavior can be an important mechanism for the maintenance and survivor of the hive, although, few studies about the hygiene of hives were done in this group. Thus, the goal of this work was to characterize the hygienic behavior in Plebeia lucii, describing the sequence of behavioral acts and the age of the workers involved in the cleaning process and evaluating the influence of climatic factors as well as the internal conditions of the colony on the removal rate of dead larvae. The experiment was conducted in the Central Apiary from the Federal University of Viçosa, between April 14th, 2015 to March 04th, 2016. The sequence of behavioral acts was observed by filming. Dead larvae were obtained through the technique of “freezer-killing” and were inserted in two experimental hives. The removal rate was assessed daily by direct count of the number of larvae removed for 10 days in eight experimental hives. The hygienic behavior is characterized sequentially through the cell’s punctuation, the partial destruction of the cell, removal of the dead larvae and removal of the cell’s remains. The age range of the workers involved in the cleaning process is broad. The removal rate varies between experiments as well the start of the cleaning process and the number of larvae removed daily. Climatic factors do not influence directly the hygienic behavior, and the removal rate was higher in hives with higher amounts of food, resin, new offspring, old offspring and waste. On the other hand, abiotic factors influenced indirectly on the hygienic behavior, considering that they affected the internal conditions of the hive. P. lucii has an effective hygienic behavior, which reinforces the existence of this mechanism in Meliponini; this may have an important role in the prevention of disease in this group.
