Abstract: | A ordem Odonata é atualmente subdividida em duas subordens, Zygoptera e
Epiprocta. Estes insetos apresentam alta variabilidade morfológica e comportamental,
The order Odonata 1s currently divided into two suborders, Zygoptera and Epiprocta. These insects present considerable morphological and behavioral variability, which were relatively poorly studied m evolutionary terms. In this study, we used phy- logenetic hypotheses based on mitochondrial DNA sequences to test hypotheses related to the behavior of landing (with the wings open or closed) in Zygoptera (Chapter 1), and check the taxonomic subdivision of the family Libellulidae (Epiprocta) - Chapter 2. The results of Chapter 1 suggest that the landing wing position 1s a phylogenetically re- stricted character, which should be associated with either the foraging behavior (specifi- cally the speed of responses of the animal) and their ability to remam cryptic to preda- tors. If one species 1s fast enough, It can be conspicuous (land with open wings), and 1f 1t1s cryptic (land with wings closed), 1t can be slow. In Chapter 2 we tested the subdivi- sion of Libellulidae withm subfamilies, which was not found 1n other molecular phylo- genetics studies. This lack of resolution could be attributed to insufficient sampling spe- cies since genera and subfamilies of South America were absent. However, the inclu- ston of more species did not solve the subdivision. We found, using molecular clock techniques that Libellulidae 1s an old family, which survived to the great mass extinc- tion KT (late Cretaceous and early Tertiary, 65 Mya). In addition, 1t suffered three ex- pansions of the number of species: the first due to expansion of angiosperms (which began 100 Mya), the second after the great KT extinction; and the third during a cooling of the Earth that replaced rainforests by lawns, allowing the expansion of species found mn open areas was 34 Mya. These chapters represent the beginning of a series of studies involving the order Odonata, which have the objective of understand, through hypothe- sis tests, the evolution of different behaviors and morphological characters. |
