Intensity of ceratocystis-wiltin mango tree under differents levels of salinity
This study aimed to assess the intensity of ceratocystis-wiltin mango trees under differents levels of salinity in three mango trees varieties considered resistant to the disease. Plants of Tommy Atkins, Dura and Ubá were grown in vases with 20 L of washed sand and submitted to daily irrigation with 3 L of modified Hoagland solution. After the acclimation period of the hydroponic system, NaCl was added to the nutrient solution. 50 days after being submitted to salt stress, plants of the three varieties were inoculated. The assessments were performed 1, 14, 28 and 42 days after inoculation. We evaluated the incidence and progression of the symptoms of the Ceratocystis fungus in plants, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and macronutrient content in leaves and branches of the Tommy Atkins variety and leaves, branches and roots of the Tommy Atkins, Ubá and Dura varieties. The experiment was performed in a factorial arrangement (4 x 2), randomized block design, four salt concentrations (0, 30, 60 and 90 mmol L-1NaCl) and inoculated and not inoculated plants with the fungus Ceratocystis fimbriata Ellis & Halst., isolated CEBS15, in five repetitions, each plot being formed by a vase with one plant per vase. For data analysis, we used descriptive statistics. Of the three varieties, Ubá showed the smallest lesion length in the stems of the plants, followed by Tommy Atkins and Dura. It was observed in the three studied varieties of plants and at all levels of salinity that there was incidence of the disease with different levels of severity. The symptoms of ceratocystis-wilt in the branches and stems occurred in all salinity levels, but, in general, there was no clear trend in the evolution of symptoms due to the tested salinity levels. As for the nutrient contents, there were, in general, the same trends between inoculated and not inoculated plants, but it was not possible to verify a defined standard of increase or decrease due to the salt concentrations and inoculation. There was no difference between inoculated and not inoculated plants, gas exchange, water potential and photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, regardless of the NaCl concentration used. The Ubá variety was the most resistant to the fungus C. fimbriata and ‘Tommy Atkins’ was the most sensitive to salinity, followed by ‘Dura’ and 'Ubá', the last one being the less sensitive to salinity.
