The interest in the subject started from the need to discuss social reading practices in the rural context, because you can notice an overvaluation trend of scientific knowledge and urban culture in academic studies, in general, in contrast to the rural knowledge . Our aim is to expand the notion of reading in order to see it in other resources that not only the book. This way, it was possible to think of the practice of reading also as a world of reading practice, sharing the knowledge among individuals. This exchange of knowledge is usually done either through writing, using a variety of tools, and through orality. However, as our society tends to overestimate the written culture, communities that have a strong oral basis or who do not share the writing and academic cultural knowledge tend to suffer the effects of symbolic hierarchy. We chose a specific rural community, the Ubari district, MG, through interviews with ten elderly and ten young people, to investigate their reading practices and share knowledge. Our hypothesis is that when sharing knowledge in the rural context it occurs orally, through speaking, the elderly are the main responsible for the perpetuation of this knowledge between generations. In this context, we imagined that the space for reading books would be reduced and limited only to the youngest, because of school requirements. We found that orality is not a distinctive feature of the knowledge sharing in the rural community anymore. Young people have looked for technological supports, where they can practice the reading as a source of information and entertainment, especially the ones linked to leisure and fun texts. The elderly, in turn, were nostalgic in relation to the times in which orality was a common practice for dissemination of knowledge, mainly based on the practice of listening to the older ones. Although not feeling young people's interest in hearing the knowledge they have to transmit, they still perform specific reading practices such as Bible reading and religious activities, sympathies, blessing, writing practice of personal memories vi etc. When we think about the place that reading of academic books have in rural areas, we realize that this kind of reading, despite being surrounded by an aura of reverence and respect, is really away from the daily practices. To conclude recognizing that reading is important for the social integration of the citizen is true, but it is not enough to make a group of people read the texts that the school and the university elected as fundamental; reading only becomes an effective practice when it matches the realities and needs of the individual. For example, among older, faith-based texts are read more often; because it‘s part of their interest and matches their expectations and values. Among young people, reading magazines varieties and internet sites also represent the desire for a voluntary and therefore enjoyable reading.en
