The increase of the [CO2] shows several direct and indirect results in plants, whereas the beneficial effects on the growth of the plants also depend on their hydric state. So, this work was carried out to analyze and quantify the photosynthetic rate and the productivity under high [CO2] in the maize (Zea mays L.) and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crops subjected to hydric stress. The experiments were conducted in the Infraestrutura de Pesquisa em Estresse Hídrico and Salino pertaining to the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, by using the maize during the period from October 2008 to March 2009 and the bean from April to July 2009. To enrich the air with CO2, top-open chambers were used, whereas the hydric stress was applied on the bean crop only, by beginning before the flowering phase and concluding at the beginning of maturation, as lasting for 40 days. The maize cultivar AG9010 (Agroceres) was used, whereas the bean one was the Majestoso (UFV). The photosynthetic rate measurements were accomplished and the yield of the grains and dry matter of the plant aerial part were determined at the end of the crop cycles. The randomized block experimental design was used, with four replicates (blocks) for both crops. For bean, however, the plots were divided into subplots for application of the hydric stress. Those plots used for maize and bean were given the primary treatment (P): P1 - plants cropped in top-open chambers at 700ppm [CO2]; P2 - plants cropped in top-open chambers with environmental [CO2]; and P3 - control. Those subplots only used for bean were given the secondary treatment (S): S1 - control; and S2 hydric stress. The results were subjected to variance analysis (Anova) and to Tukey test at 5% probability level. All measurements of the photosynthetic rate (μmol.m-2.s-1) showed significant difference only for plot (P), with increments of the photosynthetic rates in P1, between 27.73 to 32.02% for maize and 12.50 to 69.59% for bean. The lowest photosynthetic rates (-51.44%) were found in the bean plants submitted to hydric stress (P2S2). In the bean crop, the photosynthetic acclimatization was observed in P1 and P2, whereas the maize showed no acclimatization. For maize, the total weight of the grains (g) and the dry matter of the aerial part (g) presented no increments for P1 in spite of the highest photosynthetic rates. For bean, the total weight of the grains (g) presented no increment for P1S1, as only reduction in the total weight of the grains was verified for the treatments submitted to hydric stress. The dry matter of the bean presented 20.88% increments for P1 and -34.27% reductions for the subplots with hydric stress (P2S2). Both crops presented higher photosynthetic rates in high [CO2], with higher response for the bean. No increase in the total weight of the grain occurred in both crops, in spite of the high photosynthetic rates. The increase of the [CO2] provides increased dry matter of the aerial part only in the bean crop.
