This work was developed to define strategies for rational irrigation scheduling in cultivation of sugarcane in the northern semi-arid region of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in order to optimize production resources, especially water and electricity to maximize crop water use efficiency. Three experiments were installed in the city of Jaíba, Minas Gerais, each in an area of approximately 54 ha irrigated by a center pivot system. The first experiment evaluated the yield and industrial productivity of sugarcane and as well as morphological and physiological indicators of water stress in function of irrigation depths; the second experiment studied the reduction of evapotranspiration for sugarcane irrigated under different conditions of water availability; and the third experiment evaluated indicators of sugarcane development, maturation and yield as a function of the date of irrigation interruption. The area was planted with sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) Cultivar RB 86-7515, utilizing plants in the fourth crop cycle (third ratoon) after the 2009/2010 harvest for the experiments of irrigation depths and the evapotranspiration reduction, and plants in the third cycle (second ratoon), in the maturation phase, for the experiment of irrigation interruption. The irrigation management was done with the software Irriger®, which determines the water requirements for the culture. In the experiment of irrigation depths, the emitter nozzles were exchanged for the application of treatments, so that at each vane between pivots a specific depth was applied, using six treatments (25, 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150% ETc). To evaluate the reduction of evapotranspiration for sugarcane by controlling the soil water availability ("f" factor), an experiment was conducted in an area that was divided into four quadrants, with the decision to application of different irrigation levels for each quadrant, resulting in different irrigation frequencies. The treatments corresponded respectively to the following factors of soil water availability: 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9. In the experiment evaluating the best time for irrigation interruption, water application was discontinued on June 15 and August 29 for T1 and T2, respectively, and on September 13 and 28 for T3 and T4, respectively, in 2010. Sugarcane harvest for all treatments occurred on October fifth, resulting in plants of T1, T2, T3 and T4 to remain 51, 37, 22 and 7 days without irrigation or rainfall (dsi), respectively. With the results obtained for late maturity sugarcane RB 86-7515, under the conditions which the experiment was conducted in semi-arid northern Minas Gerais State, it was concluded that, although they reach the maximum yield (112.3 t ha-1) with 1,537.2 mm of water in the crop cycle, the maximum economic yield (108.5 t ha-1) was obtained with the depth of 1,333.8 mm. The depth that provided the highest sugar yield (17.56 t ha-1) was 1,508.4 mm. The best economic performance, in terms of sugar per unit area, was 17.4 t ha-1 with supply of 1,406 mm of water (recommended depth), resulting in the demand of 808 m3 of water per ton of sugar produced. Irrigation depths greater than 1,000 mm promoted dextran levels above the limits established for sugar production. It is recommended for the ethanol, and especially for sugar industry, to introduce the analysis of dextran in the laboratory routine. There was a tendency for the leaf area index (LAI) of sugarcane to increase as increasing the irrigation depth in the crop cycle. The increase in LAI was greatest in treatments receiving more water, leaf water potential was lower for decreased irrigation levels, with emphasis on the treatment that received the least amount of water (25%). Leaf temperature was close to the air temperature in the treatments receiving the highest depths (100-150%), with a trend for greater difference between leaf temperature when decreasing the water supply. There was also a trend that the chlorophyll index (ICF) increases with increased irrigation depths, with a slight drop in treatments that received depths greater than 100% of the ETc. When to irrigating sugarcane with "f" 0.7 there was a 17% reduction in evapotranspiration compared to the "f" 0.5. Irrigation at "f" 0.3 is not recommended since it increases water consumption by 20% compared to "f" 0.5 and there is no increase in stalk and sugar yield. Higher values in the water use efficiency (EUA) were found for the depth of 1540 mm with respect to stalks (8.29 kg m-3) and sugar yields (1.22 kg m-3). It is recommended to use "f" 0.5 for irrigation management to maximize EUA of stalks and sugar yield. The highest sugar yield per unit area occurred in T2, with 18.73 tons of sugar per hectare, followed by T1, with 17.06 t ha-1, T3 with 15.18 t ha-1 and T4 with 12.97 t ha-1. Studies are needed to evaluate the sugarcane development in clayey and sandy soils, with irrigation performed for different "f" factors. There was anticipation of leaf senescence in sugarcane when irrigation was stopped early in the maturation phase. The cessation of irrigation for sugarcane 51 days before harvest promoted a decrease in productivity of up to 26 t ha-1 and there was no increase of industrial yield (ATR) when maintaining irrigation until the next harvest. It is not recommended to interrupt irrigation of sugarcane at only seven days before harvesting in order to increase the sucrose content in the stalks.
