Provide favorable thermal conditions, in the way the animals can do a better utilization of the feed nutrients is the main goal to be achieved in modern poultry production, tends in view that in situation of high temperatures, the nutritional requirements are modified. Then, considering birds, it is necessary to establish an optimal level of metabolizable energy in the diet so that it can provide better performance to them, when subjected to unfavorable environmental conditions. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the productive performance of broiler chickens in the growth period (22 to 42 days of age), submitted to two different temperatures (T1= 25 °C, inside the thermoneutral zone, and T2=31 °C, in heat stress), and to four different levels of metabolizable energy (3,050; 3,125; 3,200 and 3,275 kcal.kg -1 ) in the diet. For each thermal condition imposed, the birds were submitted to different levels of metabolizable energy. The experiment was carried out in split-plot scheme, being the temperatures, the plots, being the metabolizable energy levels, the sub-plots and being the days of life of the birds, the sub-sub-plots, in totally randomized design, with five replications. The following parameters were evaluated: abdominal fat, body weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, cloacal temperature, mean body temperature, yields of carcass, cuts and organs. It was found that the temperatures affected (P<0.01) the body weight results, which were 6.96% higher for the birds submitted to temperature inside the thermoneutral zone (25oC). The birds decreased the feed intake when they were submitted to heat stress temperature (31oC). The results of cloacal temperature were higher for the chickens submitted to 31oC. The results for yield of heart and of "thigh + drumstick", were 10.1% and 2.1%, respectively, lower for the birds submitted to 31oC. The increase in the metabolizable energy level improved the feed conversion. The best value of feed conversion, 1.93, was attained in the metabolizable energy level of 3,275 kcal.kg - 1 . The carcass yield values were higher for the birds submitted to 31oC, except for the level 3,200 kcal.kg -1 , in which it was verified the best result for the comfort situation. The yield of "thigh + drumstick" decreased 7.9% with the increase in the metabolizable energy level, being the best yield verified in 3,050 kcal.kg -1 . As long as the birds got older, the body weight increased in 43.3%, the weight gain decreased and the feed conversion increased. In the same way, it was verified a decreasing in viability, being observed in the 35 th and 42 nd days of life’s bird, results below to the recommended in the literature, i.e., up to 95%. The cloacal temperature values increased with the increase in the bird’s age and, for the mean body weight it was the opposite, which decreased. It can be concluded that, for the thermoneutrality as well as for the heat stress condition, the increase in the metabolizable energy level did not influence the performance of broiler chickens, with age between 21 and 42 days of life and induced to distinct effects in the physiological responses and in the carcass yield.
