Controlled release of copper (II) complex with EDTA from matrices chitosan and agar

The release of copper (II) complex with EDTA in polymeric matrices is desirable because it can allow the concentration’s maintenance of this metal in an optimum range for a long time from a single application, enabling more efficient absorption of this metal by plants, without the problems of excess ligands in the system. In this present work, the Controlled release of copper (II) complex [CuEDTA] 2- was studied in matrices of agar and chitosan. The matrix containing 1% of agar with pellets edges of 5 mm in solution, without the presence of ionic strength, showed 97% of release in diffusional process, explained in the Noyes-Whitney model that was selected by analysis of the waste. Through 23 factorial design with center point, it was determined that there is a significant influence of the agar content on the saturation concentration and the size of the pellets agar on the kinetics of release and there is no influence of ionic strength. In the Cu (II)-EDTA release from chitosan matrix, the average degree of reticulation was determined by potentiometric titration and the consumer glutaraldehyde was determined by molecular spectrophotometry, and it was proposed a semi-quantitative method using infrared (FT-IR). The glutaraldehyde concentration was 630 mmol L -1 . This concentration is capable to block about 80% of the available amino groups in chitosan. It was also verified the influence of pH on the adsorption and in solution, the degree of reticulation and the external ionic strength on the release of Cu (II)- EDTA from the chitosan matrix through a 2 4 factorial design with central point. The concentration of saturation was significantly influenced by the pH of the solution and the adsorption, by ionic strength in solution, and by the interaction between the degree of reticulation of chitosan and pH of adsorption and the ionic strength and pH release.
