This work was carried out in a rural holding called Fazenda Lago Verde, in the municipality of Lagoa da Confusao, Tocantins, Brazil, and its objectives were to characterize the floristic composition and the structure of two natural fragments of floodplain forest, being one inserted in a native vegetation matrix without anthropogenic disturbance, and the other inserted in a rice cultivation project; to understand the relations of floristic similarity among the natural fragments of floodplain forests, swamp forests and riparian forests; to delimitate and quantify the degraded and non degraded areas of permanent preservation (APP) based on the legislation through the Geographic Information System (GIS), as well as the Cerrado physiognomy, the natural fragments of floodplain forests and those that were suppressed, and the agricultural areas. In the floristic survey of the two natural fragments of floodplain forest all the shrubby-arboreal individuals with a perimeter at 1.30 m above ground (PBH) 2 15 cm were smpled. For the floristic comparison among the floodplain forest fragments of this study and other forests also under seasonal floods and, or water saturation of the soil of the North, Central-West and Southeast regions, 19 works on floristics and phytosociology were chosen. The delimitation and quantification of the vegetation cover and land use in the holding were aided by the software SPRING for Windows version 4.1. The main conclusions were that, (a) the floristic similarity among the chosen areas was low among all the forests compared, but a greater similarity was found among the riparian forests of the Federal District and between the two floodplain forest fragments of this study; (b) it was verified that six species of six different families summed up to 55.34% of the total number of the individuals sampled in the native area fragment, where the most abundant families were Fabaceae, Clusiaceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Ebenaceae, Rutaceae and Annonaceae; (c) in the agricultural area where the most abundant families were Fabaceae, Vochysiaceae, Annonaceae and Malvaceae. The species with greatest CV, in decreasing order, were Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel var. rubiginosum (Mart. ex Tul.) Benth., Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess. and Licania apetala (E. Mey.) Fritsch in the native area, and Hirtella racemosa Lam., Qualea multiflora Mart. and Cecropia pachystachya Trécul in the agricultural area. The values of H’ (Shannon) and J (Equability) for the rice cultivation area was 3.44 nats/individual and 0.806, respectively, values that can be considered high in relation to the other fragment, where the values were 2.97 nats/individual and 0.761. Of a total of 665 individuals sampled in the native area fragment only 59 (8.8%) were dead, and in the agricultural area fragment this number was 26 (3.22%) showing that the fragments are not under an anthropogenic disturbance that will cause an impressive mortality, but this does not nullify the need of establishing more effective public policies aiming at the conservation of the forest cover of these fragments in accordance to the agricultural and cattle raising development. In relation to the remote sensing and Geographic Information System used in this work, it was concluded that they showed to be effective because they allowed the obtention of information such as the detection of areas considered as of legal and illegal use in the rural holding studied, providing fundamental data for the planning of areas that can be reclamated, as well as generated data that will be used for forest control, that is, licencing, fiscalization and monitoring of this area.
