Ecological interactions in the tomato plant-arthropod herbivores complex mediated by odors

In a food web the ecological interactions are diverse and its members may use the same volatile signals to their own benefit. Taking plants and herbivores as part of a food web, we can verify that the interactions occurring are different from those of a simple food chain. Plants are able to exchange information through volatiles compounds, i.e. infochemicals. This chemical communication among plants is important in the shaping and structuring of the food web and certainly interferes in the plant-herbivore interactions. Herbivores can perceive volatiles produced by plants, thereby benefiting from the information conveyed by the compounds. Plants actively produce infochemicals when damaged by herbivores and the herbivores are themselves odors sources used by the coespecifics during searching for their hosts. Studies on herbivore foraging behavior are fundamental for understanding the interactions among the organisms in a food web. The goals of this investigation were to study the behavioral interactions between the tomato plants (Lycopersicon lycopersicum), variety Santa Cruz, and the two important economic pests in the culture of tomato, the mite Tetranychus evansi (Acari: Tetranychidae) and the aphid Myzus persicae (Homoptera: Aphididae). It was used olfactometer techniques and release-recapture experiments of the chosen arthropods. It was not found significant differences on the responses of the herbivores to clean plants kept close or far away from plants damaged by coespecifics, and to plants that have been previously infested but had their animals removed when compared to clean plant. The intraspecific communication among tomato plants, that can influence the carnivore behavior, did not alter the herbivore behavior. The infochemicals released by the previously infested tomato plants and/or clean plants may be different to the herbivore to influence its decision- making or insufficient to be perceived by the herbivores at the intensity and duration of the infestation used in this work. Herbivores had significant preference for coespecific-infested plants. They did not avoid intraspecific competition when offered odors from infested plants with coespecifics against clean plants. When it was offered coespecifics as odor sources against previously infested plant, the herbivores preferred coespecifics. The latter results show the importance of the coespecific presence to the host finding by the herbivores.
