O bestiário como representação da memória em Peregrinação de Barnabé das Índias de Mário Cláudio

Abstract

Desde Camões, sabemos que não é somente de esplendor e heroísmo que foi construído o perfil de Vasco da Gama e suas viagens. O romance Peregrinação de Barnabé das Índias (1998), de Mário Cláudio, é um exemplo importante de que a viagem do Gama, longe de ser um definido episódio histórico, é uma fonte plural de interpretação. Para mostrarmos que essa obra de Mário Cláudio não é uma mera reprodução da forma através da qual muitos cronistas narraram tal empresa com o protagonismo dos grandes vultos da história oficial, julgamos conveniente situar o autor e sua obra em relação à tradição crítica em que se insere, buscando sintetizar um percurso pontuado pelas manifestações históricas e literárias que também cobrem a representação das viagens gâmicas e com as quais o autor dialoga. Tal exercício investigativo nos remeterá a um balanceamento cultural sobre Vasco da Gama enquanto tema, nos permitindo olhar de forma mais atenta e substanciada os intertextos e os diálogos construídos na obra através dos registros dessa tradição. A necessidade desse alargamento na pesquisa se justifica pelo fato de que o escritor Mário Cláudio apresenta uma faceta de investigador e de bibliófilo que, encontrando na literatura a continuidade da sua atividade profissional, o faz inscrever eruditamente cada um de seus livros respeitando a herança cultural de seu tema ou objeto de representação. Veremos que um dos temas intertextuais mais prestigiados por Mário Cláudio são os portentos e os bestiários da nossa tradição ocidental. Tais elementos vão ter um papel imaginário muito importante no plano representativo em várias de suas obras, especialmente na Peregrinação de Barnabé das Índias. Constataremos que nessa obra é predominante a representação literária de um imaginário opressor que reflete a necessidade humana de experiências novas. Esse é o principal movimento circunscrito no romance, que serve ambiguamente à representação do maravilhoso da tradição épica e como ―contradiscurso‖ ou contramitologia às questões sociológicas implicadas pelo seu contexto cultural. Nessa dupla estratégia de representação, encontraremos a originalidade de sua escrita, garantindo ao leitor um texto literário de densa pesquisa e grande poder criativo.

The romance Peregrinação de Barnabé das Índia (1998) of Mário Cláudio, is an important example that these travels, far from being a defined historical episode, is a plural source of interpretation. In order to show that this book is not a sample reproduction of the form through many chroniclers narrate, with the leadership of the great figures of the official history, it s seems appropriate to situate the writer and his work in relation to the critical tradition about this episode. Such investigative exercise is going to enable us to make a cultural balancing on Vasco da Gama as a subject, allowing a more closely and richly reading of the book s intertexts and dialogues. The need for this extended research is justified by the fact that Mário Cláudio presents a facet of researcher and bibliophile from his academic formation, finding in the literature the continuity of their works. Therefore, each of his books is composed with an eruditely taste, in respect, above all, of the cultural heritage of the subjects or objects representation. By the way, we are going to see that one of the most prestigious intertextual themes explored by Mário Cláudio are the portents and bestiary of our western tradition. Such elements will have a very important role in imaginary plan in several of his works, especially in the Peregrinação de Barnabé das Índias. We are also going to note that this work is composed, predominantly, by a literary representation of an oppressor imaginary that reflects the human need for new experiences. This is the main movement circumscribed in the novel, which serves as wonderful representation of the epic tradition and as a "counter- discourse" or counter-mythology, to represent not only the historical episode, but also the sociological issues of the book s cultural context. In this dual strategy of representation, we are going to find the originality of his writing, providing the reader a literary text of dense research and great creative power.
