Sodium restriction for ants in natural and anthropogenic environments

Several chemical elements are fundamental to organisms that compose an ecosystem, but in some places or times of the year can be observed restriction of these elements in nature. Among the important elements for organisms, can highlight sodium, an element of fundamental importance to plants and animals, for their physiological functions. The sodium can be found in nature as part of the biomass of organisms or can be found principally in the soil. Habitats where observe any human intervention, it is expected that there is a modification or even restricting certain chemical elements. Accordingly, as sodium is part of the solution of many soils in Brazil can be expected with human action, the arrangement of the sodium in the soil could also be modified. In Brazil, specifically in Zona da Mata Mineira, any agricultural practices can affect the dynamics of sodium in the soil, for example, cattle with exotic pasture and coffee plantations. One of the quickest and low cost tools used to measure the degree of habitat disturbance is the utilization of organisms that may reflect the restriction or excess of certain chemical element in habitats, among the organisms most commonly used, there are the ants. Thereby, the specific objectives of this study were to test the following hypotheses: i) the availability of salt in the soil is bigger in disturbed areas (eg pasture and plantation) than preserved areas (forests) ii) the utilization of salt by ants is bigger in preserved areas (forests) than in areas with human activities (eg pasture and plantation); iii) there is a negative effect of the concentration of sodium in the soil on the use of sodium baits for ants, and this effect is dependent on the sampled habitat (pasture, plantation and forest). To test these hypotheses was chosen three habitats (coffee plantation, pasture and forest) in cities of Alto Jequitibá Alto Caparaó, Luisburgo, Viçosa and Ervália that comprise the Zona da Mata Mineira. After the sample collection soils procedure, we proceeded to analyze this soil, in order to identify the concentration of sodium. About ants, species and the preferences by solutions offered were identified, both analyzes were performed in the laboratory. For the sampling procedure ants, were offered distilled water, glucose and saline solutions, placed directly on the ground, with a distance of 2 meters apart on a plot of 60x60 meters in each habitat studied were offered. Was observed that the concentration of sodium in the soil of anthropogenic habitats (pasture and plantation) is higher than in natural habitats (forests), but there was no effect of the concentration of sodium in the soil on the use of salt baits by ants, being that it did not vary with habitat. The ants may not be sensitive to small changes in salt concentration in soil, or sodium not be restricted in natural environments studied, which would explain no differential preference for baits salt in natural environments. We then suggest that the action of man is responsible for the largest influx of sodium in the environments, however, despite the difference of this element in soil habitats studied, the ants showed no preference differential in relation to any of the solutions. It is believed that the ants were not sensitive to small variations of sodium in the soil, or that there is no restriction in the diet of the element of sampled ants, which could explain the absence of preference for this element. so the anthropogenic modification of sodium caused no visible impact on ant communities studied.
