Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk in continuous stocking was evaluated at the same grazing intensity. The experiment was carried out in two consecutive agriculture years (from December to April, 2001/2002 and 2002/2003). The treatments consisted in four rates of nitrogen (N) (75, 150, 225 e 300 kg/ha.year), split in three times at 1/3 of the doses, in three evaluation months in the first year (February, March and April) and in five months in the second year (December, January, February, March and April). It was used a random block design with two replicates (pickets). Economic and sensitivity analyses were carried out to evaluate the viability of nitrogen fertilization in the pasture production system. The demography of living tillers was not altered by the evaluation months; however, the means influenced and were higher in March and April. The population of dead tillers was higher in April in both experimental years. Nitrogen fertilization promoted a positive linear response to the demography of living tillers with means of 1,496 and 2,199 and 1,545 and 3,145 tillers/m2, at the doses of 75 and 300 kg/ha, in both years, respectively. Higher proportions of leaf blades were found in March in the first year and in December and January in the second year. However, there were no great differences regarding to proportion of culms in the pasture according to the evaluation months, in both years. Overall, doses of N did not influence proportion of leaf blades and RLC, on the hand, proportion of culms increased and dead matter linearly decreased on pasture in the second year. Leaf area index of the pasture was higher in March and April in the first year and in February and March in the second year. There was also a response from LAI according to N, ranging from 2.74 to 4.28 and from 2.76 to 4.30 at the doses of 75 and 300 kg/ha, in both years, respectively. TAcMS was little influenced in the evaluation years with records of lower means only in April in the first and second year. However, regarding to the influence of nitrogen fertilization, it was found positive linear responses with records of TAcMS of 51.6 and 116.9 and 120.7 and 153.1 kg/ha.day at the doses of 75 and 300 kg/ha, in both years, respectively. In relation to chemical composition of the brachiaria, contents of CP in February were higher than the other months in both years. Moreover, there were positive linear responses in the contents of CP according to the N in all months in both years. Contents of NDF, ADF and lignin were altered in the evaluation months in both years. On the other hand, N did not affect such constituents of cell wall in both years. Similarly, coefficients of DIVMS were little altered according to the evaluation months but when there was a response, April, in both years, presented lower means than the other months. Regarding to nitrogen fertilization, there were no responses, with a record of an overall mean of 54.6% for the coefficients of DIVMS of brachiaria. In both years, DMST and DMSV linearly increased according to N, estimating values of DMST ranging from 6,782.1 and 8,456.1 kg/ha and 7,655.5 and 9,761.5 kg/ha in the first and second year, respectively, at the doses of 75 and 300 kg/ha. Nitrogen fertilization linearly increased the potential intake of leaf blades, which composed proportions ranging from 62.6 to 73.7% and from 42.4 to 55.4% of the total diet at the doses of 75 and 300 kg.ha in both years. Nevertheless, doses of N did not affect potential intake of culms by the animals, with records of 21 and 29% of the component present in the diet, in both years. Increases were found in the amount of crude protein (CP) of the potential edible forage according to the N, with estimated values of 9.9 and 14.5% and 9.6 and 13.6%, at the doses of 75 and 300 kg/ha. Doses of N did not influence the contents of NDF in the potentially edible forage, with means of 72.9 and 76.3% in both years. The in vitro dry matter coefficient of digestibility (INDMCD) of the potentially edible forage was affect by fertilization, with an estimated minimal value of 73.1% with the dose of 153.9 kg/ha of N. Overall, it was found that chemical composition of the potentially edible forage was little changed according to the N, which leads to the conclusion that the quality of the diet directly depends on grazing selectivity by the animal and to the level of N applied when the same grazing pressure is maintained in the different treatments. Nitrogen fertilization increased the pasture caring capacity (CC), with estimated values of 3.6 and 5.3 UA/ha and 3.7 and 5.2 UA/ha, at the doses of 75 and 300 kg/ha, respectively, in both years. However, doses of N did not influence individual weight gain of calves (DWG). Nevertheless, live weight gain (LWG) per area (Gain/ha) linearly increased according to the doses of N with estimated values of 404.2 and 737.9 kg/ha and 619.7 and 1,008.4 kg/ha, respectively at the doses of 75 and 300 kg/ha, in both years. For the efficiencies of responses, the values were 1.5 and 1.7 kg.ha of LWG/kg.ha of N, estimated in the first and second years, respectively. The profit (P) per area (180 days) had quadratic behavior in the first and second year, with maximal estimated values of R$ 300.0/ha and R$ 468.4/ha, respectively, at estimated doses of 204.5 and 269.3 kg/ha of N applied. The maximum dose of economic efficiency (DMEE) presented a negative linear behavior as the price of the kg of N (NP) rose in the first and second year, estimating values of 252.8 and 148.9 kg/ha and 401.2 and 112.6 kg/ha of N, respectively in NP of 0.6 and 1.6 kg equivalent of cattle. To make the production of nitrogen fertilizer in idealized systems feasible, critical levels of efficiency of fertilization (NCEA) should be 1.26 and 1.22 kg.ha of cattle produced/kg.ha of N applied in the first and second years, respectively, considering costs of R$ 2.27 and R$ 2.19 for each kg of N applied, respectively, and the price per kilogram of live cattle at R $ 1.797 (US$53.90/ha).
